I went to my first Fringe Festival in 2000, up in Canada and got completely turned
on by the excitement, community and all around creative energy that surrounded the
event. In the following years, I went back several more times, to see more art,
meet more people and become more inspired. For a long time, the inspiration manifested
in a desire to move to Canada. But what I really wanted was to be a part of making
that kind of artistic exuberance happen in the beautiful place where I live.
Boulder does not lack in artistic talent or even interest in the arts from the community.
What it lacks is focus and momentum. The Fringe is an incredible opportunity to
focus the community. Artists find out who else is out there making art. The public
and the media discover a wealth of talent to enjoy and support. Plus, an arts explosion
like a Fringe Festival is an excellent opportunity to cultivate momentum for a lively
arts community year-round.
I think Boulder can be the kind of place we can love to live and make art in. This
is why I am so committed to making this festival a success. Every artist I know
has pined for a stronger artistic community. The Boulder International Fringe Festival
is our opportunity to build a very strong foundation for one. I hope to see you
all out there on the Fringe!
